Although several rankings have previously placed Spain among the best countries for digital nomadism and remote work, during the summer of 2024, there has been a notable increase in interest from highly qualified professionals in settling in the country, especially in Madrid.
According to El Debate, the Spanish capital has significantly boosted its capacity to welcome digital nomads, establishing itself as a hub for “vacation work”: young people who take advantage of the summer to explore other countries and their conditions for remote work before applying for a visa or permanent residency.
One of the reasons Madrid has become a favored destination is the growing infrastructure and connectivity it offers. This includes a strong network of coworking spaces, advanced technological infrastructure, and efficient public transportation, making it easy for remote work and mobility both within the city and internationally.
Its strategic location also plays a crucial role. Its proximity to other European destinations allows professionals to easily move between cities, offering both business and leisure opportunities. Additionally, the city boasts a rich cultural and gastronomic scene.
Another important factor is the cost of living. Compared to other major European capitals like London or Paris, Madrid offers a higher quality of life at a relatively lower cost, which is essential for those looking to maximize their purchasing power without sacrificing comfort.
Moreover, Spain, in general, has adopted favorable policies toward digital nomads. As Público reports, the country has become the third most popular destination in the world for these workers. This is partly due to its focus on attracting international talent through measures such as the Digital Nomad Visa.
For Latin American professionals and executives, there is an additional advantage: after two years of residence in the country, they can apply for citizenship, and with it, the Spanish passport, one of the best in the world, allowing visa-free travel to 192 international destinations or visa-on-arrival access, including the United States and China.
Requirements for Obtaining a Digital Nomad Visa in Spain
To qualify, you need to prove that you have been working for at least one year, and that your income is equivalent to twice the minimum wage in Spain (until the end of 2024, this amounts to approximately €2,268, increasing to €2,290 from 2025). This income must come from an employer located outside of Spain; if you are self-employed, your income from Spanish clients must not exceed 20% of the total.
Additionally, you must prove that you possess the necessary knowledge and experience for your position.
With this visa, you can take advantage of the Beckham Law, which grants a tax benefit by allowing exemption from taxes on other (foreign) income for five years, except for salary-derived income, which is taxed at 24%.
There is no language test required, nor do you need to renounce your Chilean passport to obtain Spanish citizenship.
