Portugal and Spain remain among the most powerful passports in the world

As in previous years, in 2024, the Henley & Partners Index, which ranks countries based on their citizens’ access to other territories without needing a visa, has again placed the passports of Spain and Portugal among the most powerful in the world.

The strength of these passports lies primarily in the number of countries accessible without a visa or with a visa obtained upon arrival, offering greater freedom and convenience for travelers.

Why Spain and Portugal?

A key factor contributing to the high ranking of these passports is the membership of both countries in the European Union (EU).

Citizens of Spain and Portugal enjoy not only unrestricted access to the 27 EU member countries but also the ability to live, work, and study freely within any nation in the bloc.

Spain, with visa-free access to 192 destinations in total, ranks third in the index, while Portugal holds fourth place, allowing visa-free entry to 189 countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

The ability to enter more countries without additional procedures significantly reduces waiting times and administrative barriers, which is crucial for businesspeople, investors, and frequent travelers.

Stability and Economic Strength

The Henley & Partners ranking also reflects the stability and reliability of countries’ immigration policies, as well as the strength of their diplomatic relationships.

Spain and Portugal have historically maintained strong diplomatic relations with numerous nations, enabling them to negotiate visa waiver agreements.

Additionally, both countries are well-established democracies with high levels of security and quality of life, enhancing international confidence in the passports issued by these nations.

Can I obtain a Spanish or Portuguese passport?

Absolutely! Under current Chilean law, multiple passports are allowed as long as the rules of the issuing countries are followed.

For Spain, there is also a Dual Nationality Agreement with Chile. Furthermore, globally, 144 countries permit dual nationality, while 29 accept it with exceptions or limitations.

Can I obtain a Spanish passport through the Grandchildren’s Law? The answer is yes, but it is recommended to start the process as soon as possible, as this opportunity is only available until October 2025.

Is it possible to apply through the Golden Visa? Yes, investment remains a fully valid path to obtaining residency, and subsequently citizenship, in both countries.

In Spain’s case, despite announced changes, it is still available with a minimum investment of €500,000 in real estate.

Permanent residence in the country is not required, only an annual visit during each visa renewal process, initially valid for three years and subsequently every five years.

For Portugal, there is no real estate option, so the investment must be made in funds, with a minimum of €500,000.

To maintain the Visa, you only need to spend a minimum of seven days per year in the country during the first two years and 14 days for each subsequent two-year period.
