Golden Visa in Spain: requirements to obtain residency by investment in this country

Spain is one of the most visited countries in the world. It also boasts a first-rate quality of life, a wonderful Mediterranean climate, and a wide range of cultural attractions. It's no wonder, then, that its Golden Visa program is one of the most successful in Europe.

The popularity and recognition of the destination are so remarkable that those involved in the program don't have to make any effort to generate interest. In short, Spain takes its own appeal for granted.

This does not mean that this country's investment visa program lacks advantages that make it attractive compared to similar programs. For example, its processing times are among the fastest in Europe, unlike other countries where applications can take up to two years to process.

What are the requirements to qualify for the Golden Visa?

To participate in this program, applicants must directly acquire a property in Spain or make an equivalent investment in a real estate project that reaches €500,000. Alternatively, the possibility of investing in other assets is also offered, such as shares of Spanish companies (€1 million) or Government bonds (€2 million).

A clean criminal record must also be certified. To obtain Spanish citizenship, in addition to making the investment, the applicant must reside in the country for at least 183 days within a period ranging from 2 years (for Latin Americans) to 10 years.

The conditions are more flexible if you choose the residency option, requiring only one annual visit to Spain during each renewal process of the Golden Visa, which is initially for 3 years, and then every 5 years.

Possible changes to the Golden Visa in Spain

There has been talk of establishing new limits and regulations on residency by investment. For example, increasing the minimum investment requirement to €1 million and requiring investors to reside in Spain for at least six months a year.

These changes, intended to make it harder to misuse the program and ensure that only legitimate investors meet the eligibility requirements, were supposedly going to start being implemented in 2024. However, so far there have been no concrete announcements.
