Chile-Portugal Trade Mission 2023: opening pathways to investment

Last October, the Chile-Portugal Trade Mission 2023 took place, an initiative of the Chile-Portugal Chamber of Commerce AG with the support of ProChile, InvestChile, and AICEP Portugal Global. The main activities of this mission were held in the cities of Lisbon and Porto.

Catalina Pardo, Manager of Apparcel & Uriarte and Executive Director of the Chile-Portugal Chamber of Commerce, tells us that trade missions like this one "aim to promote trade, foster business collaboration and strengthen economic ties between countries; and this mission successfully fulfilled this objective."

“We visited companies focused on Green and Blue Economy projects, such as AST Ambiente, we had a site visit to the deep water port of Sines, the offices and dispatch center of EDP Renewables, among others,” adds the professional.

During the mission, “there was an interesting exchange of knowledge and experiences between Chilean and Portuguese companies, allowing for mutual learning,” Pardo noted, highlighting that “thanks to B2B meetings organized by the Chamber of Commerce, part of the Chilean delegation was able to establish business relationships with Portuguese companies.”

This positive assessment is shared by Rony Castillo, Deputy Commercial and Marketing Manager of Imporper. “Our company belongs to a business holding company that already has various businesses in Portugal related in general to the metalworking industry and specifically to the manufacture of structures for electrical distribution.”

For Castillo, this mission allowed them to “expand and deepen our field of action for new business opportunities, and simultaneously enabled us to take a concrete approach to close deals that were in the prospecting stage. This demonstrates that, in business relationships, a personal and close connection is fundamental.”

“In this context, the trade mission fostered a closer relationship that proved key to the positive results obtained,” he says.

Regarding the main achievements, Catalina Pardo highlights the Chile-Portugal Economic Forum, held at El Corte Inglés in Lisbon. “It was a successful event, featuring top-level speakers. Among them were the Chilean Ambassador to Portugal, Ms. Marina Teitelboim; the former ambassador and current President of the Chile-Portugal Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Pedro Pablo Díaz; the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Francisco André; the Investment Commissioner of InvestChile, Mr. Cristián Sagal; the Director of International and Institutional Relations of AICEP Portugal Global, Mr. Fernando Quintas; and the Executive Business Director LATAM of EDP Renewables, Mr. Manuel Ortiz.”

The forum was attended by representatives of “important Portuguese companies interested in learning more about the Chilean market and also Chileans already living in Portugal or wanting to settle in the country,” Pardo points out, “so this Forum provided knowledge to this diverse group of people interested in trade and strategic collaborations.”

For his part, Rony Castillo explains, Imporper was interested in “opening up commercial prospecting spaces for different industrial sectors with great potential in Portugal, a goal that was largely fulfilled, as we detected valuable opportunities in the energy and transport sectors.”

“As a second objective,” he adds, “we consider a relational approach very relevant, which is essential in industrial businesses, to resolve technical and commercial concerns for business projects that we already had underway and that, thanks to this mission, allowed us to close sales with enormous potential for our company.”

Golden Visa and residency options through investment

An activity like this, which strengthens ties between potential investors from both countries, definitely makes us consider options like residency through investment or the Golden Visa. In the case of Portugal, its Golden Visa program is one of the most successful in Europe, and the Mission undoubtedly plays an important role in connecting Portugal with interested parties from our country.

According to Castillo, “the Golden Visa is part of concrete mechanisms that Portugal makes available to investors to facilitate and stimulate business exchange, which can facilitate a positive opening of opportunities both commercially and in other complementary aspects of business development, such as training and learning about new business development cultures, which undoubtedly enrich and strengthen companies and their investors.”
