New facilities for traveling with pets from Chile
If you think more and more people are traveling with pets, you're right. According to figures from Santiago Airport, between January 2023 and May 2024, the terminal registered 44.335 pet arrivals in our country.
Similarly, during that period there were 30.479 registered departures of pets from Chile to destinations such as Argentina, Colombia, the United States, Peru and various countries of the European Union.
In our country, this issue falls under the jurisdiction of the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), which in this increase in the transport of pets, decided on measures to facilitate the procedures.
Thus, the Animal Health Export Certificate (CZE) – a document that certifies that your pet meets the entry requirements of the destination country – can be obtained digitally through the platform Cerofilas.
The service notes that since the implementation of this system, more than 1.100 digital certificates have been issued, which can be verified using a QR code and are valid for 60 days, provided that the rabies vaccine is up to date.
Things to consider so your pet can leave Chile with you:
The CZE (Certificate of Special Economic Zone) has a cost and must be requested at least 10 days in advance. You can apply online using your Clave Única (Unique Key) and Chilean identity card. Once ready, the certificate can be picked up at a SAG (Agricultural and Livestock Service) office within 3 business days.
Your pet must be registered in the National Pet Registry. You must also have a health certificate issued by a veterinarian, no more than 10 days old, proving that your pet has received the required vaccinations and deworming treatments, such as the rabies vaccine, the six-in-one/eight-in-one vaccine for dogs, or the feline triple vaccine for cats. These must meet the specific requirements of the destination country, which you can verify. in the SAG online catalog.
If you are traveling to a European Union country, it is important to select the correct options in the catalog: “European Union” under COUNTRY, “Live Animals” under CATEGORY, the corresponding SPECIES, and “Pet or Companion” under GROUP. Additionally, dogs and cats under 4 months old that have not completed their vaccination schedule have special requirements that should be checked directly with the SAG offices.
For the European Union, in addition to the rabies vaccination, which must be valid and have been administered at least 21 days before travel, countries such as Finland, Ireland, Malta, and the United Kingdom require specific deworming treatment. Echinococcus multilocularisThree additional documents must also be submitted: a declaration from the companion, one stating the absence of contact with wild animals, and another stating transit without contact with wild animals.
Remember that these rules apply only to domestic pets, such as dogs, cats and ferrets, and not to wild, hybrid or CITES protected species.
Remember that this is only a guide; official information is available on the website of the Agricultural and Livestock Service.
