Golden Visa Portugal

Portugal's Golden Visa program is the most prestigious and well-established global mobility scheme in Europe. Following the update to the regulatory framework that completely eliminated the real estate acquisition route, the program has successfully reinvented itself through financial capital vehicles and corporate incentives.

Designed for high-net-worth investors, it grants immediate legal residency, free movement within the Schengen Area and the right to apply for European citizenship, requiring a physical stay of only 7 days per year.

FAQ

Is it possible to obtain a Portuguese Golden Visa by purchasing property?
No. Under the current regulatory framework, the real estate acquisition route has been eliminated. Currently, the active and eligible legal avenues focus on investment in private equity/venture capital funds or through the creation of local jobs.
Does this program require me to move my tax residence to Portugal?
No. Obtaining a Golden Visa through the funds route does not have automatic tax implications, nor does it require you to transfer your tax residency. You only acquire tax obligations on your worldwide income if you physically reside in the country for more than 183 days per year.
What are the minimum physical stay requirements in the country?
It is one of the most flexible schemes in Europe. It only requires a minimum stay of 7 days during the first year, and 14 days in subsequent two-year periods, allowing you to maintain your current lifestyle while securing your European contingency plan.
What basic documentation is required to apply for the funds?
Applicants must be over 18 years of age and have a completely clean criminal record. Financially, they are required to open a local bank account in Portugal and provide rigorous documentation of the traceability and legal origin of the funds to be transferred.
Do the returns on these funds offer any tax benefits?
Yes, it's one of its biggest advantages. For investors who are not tax residents in Portugal, the profits and dividends generated by eligible investment funds generally enjoy tax exemption (0% withholding tax), which significantly optimizes the net return on their capital in euros.
How does the job creation process work in a startup?
It is a highly flexible alternative for innovation profiles. It allows access to the program by investing capital in the creation or expansion of a Portuguese company, provided that it generates a minimum of 5 stable jobs for local citizens, reducing the initial capital thresholds in certain technology sectors.
Can adult children be included in the same application?
Yes. Through family reunification, it is possible to include children over 18 years of age as long as it is documented that they are single, financially dependent on the main investor, and are enrolled in full-time higher education at any institution in the world.
When can I withdraw my investment?
Once the five years required by immigration law have elapsed and the process of obtaining permanent residency or citizenship is completed, the investor is fully released from the immigration program. From that moment on, they can implement their exit strategy from the fund, liquidate their holdings, and recover their capital without affecting their status as a European resident/citizen in any way.
