What they ask us on the calls

My company is Chilean and I work from my home in Chile. Does that still work?

Yes. The requirement is that the person paying you be located outside of Spain, not outside your country. A remote job from Chile to Chile—or from Argentina to Argentina—means the same, as long as the contract allows for remote work.

It's a common misconception: many people believe their employer has to be foreign, and that's not the case.

Spain or Portugal? I can't decide.

It depends on what matters more to you. Spain grants citizenship after two years of residency through agreements with Latin America, and there's no language barrier. Portugal has better tax treatment, but it doesn't offer that fast track to citizenship.

In practice: if you want a European passport, Spain. If your priority is the tax burden, Portugal.

How much tax will I pay if I move to Spain?

More so than in Portugal, and it's good to know this before deciding. The Beckham Law doesn't apply if you invoice a foreign company as a contractor.

Comparing the numbers to your specific case is part of the initial consultation: there are two jurisdictions and it depends on how your income is structured.

How long does it take to get a European passport?

After two years of legal residence in Spain, and provided you meet all other requirements, you can apply for Spanish citizenship. This also applies to your spouse and children. The requirement is having lived in Spain for more than half of each year.

Two years to be able to apply is not two years to have the passport in hand: afterwards there is a file that is resolved and has its own time.

How long does the process take?

Through the consulate, it takes between 4 and 8 months, and it depends on the workload of your country's consulate — it's a timeframe we don't control.

There's a faster route for Spain: you enter on a tourist visa, submit the application there, and the government has 20 business days to respond. If they don't respond, it's considered approved.

What exactly does the service include and what does it not?

Includes: background check and review, review and attachment of your employment contract, NIF, TIE, presentation to the consulate or government, and support until obtaining the visa, with an office in Lisbon for the final stage.

This does not include finding you a home or acting as a rental intermediary. We do, however, offer guidance on where and with whom to look. We're stating this here so that no one comes to the call expecting something we don't offer.

How much does it cost?

The fees depend on the number of people traveling and which of the two routes the application is submitted through. We'll give you the full cost in our initial conversation, along with an assessment of your eligibility.

Can I work while I'm there?

With a digital nomad visa, you work remotely for your current employer or clients, but you can't look for local employment. With a non-lucrative visa, you can't: it's designed for those who live off passive income, although you can change it while in Spain if a Spanish company offers you a contract.

Once you have citizenship, you can do whatever you want.

I don't speak Portuguese. Is that a real problem?

For Portugal, it does affect daily adjustment. It's one of the reasons we recommend Spain to Latin American families: no language barrier and agreements that shorten the path to citizenship.
