Is Djokovic gambling everything on the Greek Golden Visa?

Since various Greek media outlets reported on Novak Djokovic's visit to Athens, rumors have not stopped: is the most decorated tennis player of all time planning to move permanently to Greece?

The possibility of Djokovic applying for the Greek Golden Visa has generated speculation that, while surprising to some, is perfectly understandable to those familiar with the advantages of this attractive residency-by-investment program.

Why Greece and not Serbia?

Djokovic's decision to explore options outside his native Serbia is not just a matter of climate or landscape preferences. In recent years, the relationship between the athlete and the Serbian government has deteriorated considerably.

Following the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, where 15 people died, Djokovic expressed his solidarity with the victims and openly supported the student protests demanding accountability.

This led to a definitive break with President Aleksandar Vučić, who had previously been close to him. Conversely, Djokovic's relationship with Greece appears to be strengthening. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hosted him for a private dinner in Athens, and sources close to the tennis player confirmed that his visit included tours of properties in exclusive neighborhoods in the north of the city, as well as visits to private English-speaking schools.

The advantages of the Greek Golden Visa

Djokovic's interest in Greece may be partly motivated by the specific benefits offered by the Greek Golden Visa. This scheme allows non-EU citizens to obtain a five-year renewable residence permit by investing a minimum of €250.000 in real estate, if the property is acquired for renovation: converting commercial buildings into residential ones, for example.

From July 31, 2023, the minimum property threshold increased in certain areas, including parts of Athens, reaching up to 800 euros. This doesn't seem to be an obstacle for someone with Djokovic's financial profile.

This type of residence does not require a minimum annual stay and allows free movement within the Schengen area.

In addition, the program offers the possibility of including immediate family members—spouse, minor children, and parents—which fits perfectly with the athlete's desire to settle down with his wife Jelena and their two children.

Lifestyle and cultural proximity

The Greek Golden Visa offers more than just legal and immigration benefits. Greece presents a cultural environment similar to Serbia's, facilitating integration. Mediterranean hospitality, a mild climate, and a long Orthodox tradition make the country an ideal destination for Balkan citizens seeking stability without abandoning their roots.

Furthermore, Greece has begun to position itself as a new mecca for tennis stars. Rafael Nadal and Patrick Mouratoglou already have academies in the country, and Djokovic wouldn't be the first to see the Hellenic nation as a second home.

Reality or speculation?

During his participation in Wimbledon 2025, Djokovic partially denied the news about a permanent move, clarifying that his visit to Greece was largely for vacation and related to the activities of his foundation.

However, he did not rule out a possible future move: "It could happen," he said.

Given his demonstrated interest in properties in Athens and his affinity with the Greek authorities, it would not be unreasonable to think that Djokovic is evaluating his professional retirement from a broader perspective: that of ensuring quality of life, legal security and international mobility for his family.

Greece, the next major breaking point

For a figure like Novak Djokovic, every move on and off the court is strategic. While there is still no official confirmation of his joining the Greek Golden Visa program, the signs point to Greece as the country where this champion could write the next chapter in his life.
