In the case of the Spanish passport, the index data highlights that it allows travel without a visa to 126 countries , access to 31 destinations with a visa on arrival and to 26 countries through an electronic visa (eVisa).

These comparative indices take into account several factors, such as:

• Number of countries with visa-free accessThe more destinations a passport allows without additional paperwork, the greater its value.
• Visas on arrival and electronic visasThese facilitate access to certain countries with simplified requirements.
• Freedom of residence and workIn the case of European Union passports, they grant the right to reside, study and work in any of the 27 member states.

How to obtain a Spanish passport?

1. Citizenship by residence

The most common way to obtain a Spanish passport is through naturalization by residence . This requires living legally and continuously in Spain for 10 years before applying for citizenship. However, for citizens of Latin American countries—such as Chile—as well as those from Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, and Sephardic Jews, the residency period is reduced to 2 years.

2. Nationality by virtue of the Democratic Memory Law

Those with Spanish ancestry , such as grandchildren or great-grandchildren of Spaniards born abroad, can also apply for Spanish nationality through the Democratic Memory Law , colloquially known as the Grandchildren Law . This option will only be available until October 2025.

3. Residency by investment (Golden Visa)

The Golden Visa is a way to obtain residency in Spain in exchange for an investment , usually in real estate, of at least €500.000 . Although it does not grant direct citizenship, it does allow residency; as mentioned, Latin Americans can apply for Spanish nationality after two years of residency.

This option, however, will only be valid until April of this year.
