Reclaim Your Roots: Italian Citizenship by Descent
Italian Citizenship by Descent
Italian citizenship law offers one of the most accessible and generous routes in the world to a European nationality. Because it rests on the principle of ius sanguinis (right of blood), it imposes no generational limit, which turns your ancestors’ legacy into your single greatest global mobility asset.
Key Facts
- No generational limit
- No residency requirement
- Passport ranked the 4th strongest in the world
- The right to live and work in all 27 EU countries
Who can apply for Italian citizenship?
Scenario 1: paternal line, or post-1948
Descendants whose Italian bloodline runs purely through men (father, grandfather, great-grandfather), or where there are women in the line but their children were born after 1 January 1948. The process: citizenship passes automatically and directly. The case can be filed through the ordinary administrative route without complications.
Scenario 2: maternal line, pre-1948
Descendants where the first woman in the line of ancestry — your grandmother or great-grandmother, for example — had her child before 1 January 1948. The process: under an old Italian law, this right did not pass automatically. Our legal team claims it through court proceedings in Rome, with an absolute success rate and without you having to live in Italy.
